It was brilliant to spend a few hours with two of the bass players on the HE music degree @ Newcastle College. We talked about transcription and looked at how to get the most out of any transcription that you do. Not just learning the line, but understanding it and trying to get inside the head of the bass player who wrote it. Then we moved onto considering minor pentatonic substitution over different chords types and how this could be used for fills / solos / melodic ideas – all the result of a single bar of transcription that I did a few years ago.
The students were great to work with and came up with some excellent ideas throughout the session – I’m really looking forward to seeing what they get up to in the coming years! And of course the obligatory photo with our basses…..
